I just hada wonderful supervision session on the topic of designing a reflective processfor the supervisor I was supervising. The question was how do we make sure thatwe ask ourselves interesting questions before and after a coaching session ascoaches: questions that help us grow, that are generative, interesting andmotivating? Let me tell you how we co-created a great set of questions for myrecent supervision client. If you would like, you can use this process foryourself or discuss it with a supervisor to design your very own reflectionprocess.

Dream

“Suppose you have a really helpful reflectionprocess – how would you notice?”

“Whatdifference would it make to you?”

“Whatdifference would it make to your clients?”

“How wouldyour clients notice?”

Design

“Whichquestions would you like to ask yourself before a coaching session?”

“Which questionswould you like to ask yourself / the client after a coaching session?”

“What wouldyou like to ask yourself about:

-         Yourself

-         You as a coach

-         Your stance as a coach

-         What to do in a coaching session?”

Deliver

Test outthe questions with a real case. Write them down, write down the answers, or, ifspeaking is easier for you, dictate them into your phone or talk about themwith a supervisor.

Double-check

Check ifthe questions that you designed have the potential to generate what you wantedto generate under “Dream”

Develop

Continue todevelop and refine your questions.

Do it again

Repeat thisprocess every few months to see if you want to ask yourself differentquestions.

If you wantto share your questions or reflect on cases, your growth as a coach or learnabout our programs come to one of our free meetups and exchanges.
