Using AI to study for the ICF credentialing exam

I know, I know, we all hate the exam or if we don’t hate it, we still have to prepare for it. Recently I found several interesting ways of using different AI tools to prepare for the exam, so here are some potentially useful ideas.

Study Plan

You can use AI to create a study plan. Once you have the date at which you anticipate taking the credentialing exam, you can upload the relevant documents to any AI (ChatGPT, notebooklm, etc.) and ask it to space the content over the remaining time.

For the ICF Credentialing exam, I would recommend uploading the ICF website describing the exam, the ICF core competencies, the PCC markers, the code of ethics, the insights and considerations for ethics,  the minimum skill document for ICF ACC and ICF MCC (you will have to download the text and upload it as a document).

A prompt could be: “I have to pass the ICF Credentialing Exam in Y weeks. Please create a study plan using these websites https://coachingfederation.org/credentials-and-standards/credentialing-exam-content, https://coachingfederation.org/credentials-and-standards/core-competencies, https://coachingfederation.org/credentials-and-standards/performance-evaluations/pcc-markers, https://coachingfederation.org/ethics/code-of-ethics, https://coachingfederation.org/insights-considerations-for-ethics, https://coachingfederation.org/credentials-and-standards/performance-evaluations/minimum-skills-requirements. I have X minutes per day to study.”

Ask AI to quiz you on the material for the day

For example, if you are focusing on Core Competency 3, you can prompt something like this: “Please ask me questions to test my understanding or Core Competency 3. Please include scenario based questions with 4 answer options, one of them best, one of them worst.”  Or “Please ask me direct questions about Core Competency 3 to check my understanding.”

You can also ask AI to summarize all relevant material on the core competency you are studying: “Please summarize all material for Core Competency 3.” Google’s notebookLM can also create a podcast with two voices on the material, so you can listen to it while you are ironing or working out.

You can also ask AI to create flashcards, for example to upload into Anki or Quizlet.

If any concept sounds difficult, you can ask AI to explain it in simpler terms or different formats like analogies or stories.

Ask for spaced repetition reminders

You can aske Anki or Quizlet (or any flashcard app) to remind you to study.

To help you study

You can ask spotify or any AI to create a playlist of study music or background noise that fits your taste and use a Pomodoro timer (e.g. headspace or brain.fm) to countdown your minutes of study time.
